Fire Goat Year - watch these locations at home & in the office.

By Ken Koh, Founder and Principal Consultant, House of Feng Shui

Every feng shui year brings sectors of a property that carry heightened risk.

In the Fire Goat (丁未) year of 2027, four of them deserve particular care:

The Grand Duke (Tai Sui 太岁) in the Goat location

The Clash position (Sui Po 岁破) in the Ox location

The Three Killings (San Sha 三煞) in the West and

The Five Yellow (Wu Huang 五黄) in the North

These are not superstitions to be waved away. They are long-standing observations from classical Chinese metaphysics, and they have a very practical consequence:

Disturbing these sectors through renovation, hacking, drilling, digging or heavy works is one of the most common ways households inadvertently invite illness, accidents, disputes and financial setbacks.

If you manage a home, or you are an interior designer, contractor, electrician or builder working on other people's homes, this article is for you.

The feng shui year begins at Li Chun (立春), on or about 4 February 2027, just ahead of Chinese New Year on 6 February. The sectors below apply from that point until the next Li Chun in February 2028.

How to locate these sectors in your property:

1.       Find the center of the property. For a home, use the center of the whole floor plan. Then do the same for each individual room if you want to apply room by room.

2.       Use a proper Lo Pan or a reliable compass, and read true directions carefully. Stand at the center, take the bearings, and divide the floor plan into the 24 mountains shown above.

3.       Mark the four sectors on the floor plan. Share the marked plan with everyone involved in any works.

1. The Grand Duke in the Goat location

The Grand Duke is the ruling deity of the year, and in 2027 it resides in the Goat palace. The classical rule is simple: do not disturb the Grand Duke. Disturbing the ground or structure here is said to "move the Tai Sui's seat" and can bring trouble to the household.

Avoid in this sector:

•         Hacking walls, breaking floors or tiles, or demolition

•         Drilling, piling, digging or any groundbreaking works

•         Loud, repeated, heavy activity such as hammering, grinding and machinery

•         Moving or installing heavy fixtures and built-ins

•         Placing the main door, bed or stove directly in or facing this sector

Keep this area calm, quiet and stable. Everyday quiet use is fine. It is the disturbance that matters.

2. The Clash position in the Ox location

Opposite the Grand Duke sits the Year Breaker, or Sui Po, in the Ox sector. This is the position that directly clashes with the Grand Duke, and it is traditionally regarded as one of the most sensitive spots of the year. Disturbing it is believed to bring about accidents, injuries, reversals and conflict.

In 2027 this sector also carries the Flying Star 3, the star of conflict, so the potential for disputes and quarrels is amplified when it is stirred up.

Avoid in this sector:

•         Any renovation, demolition, hacking or heavy construction

•         Digging, drilling, piling or opening up the ground

•         Installing noisy equipment or heavy machinery

•         Placing the bed head, the cooking stove, or a frequently used desk right in the sector, where this can be avoided

•         Allowing clutter, broken items or loud activity to accumulate here

Keep it tidy, stable and quiet. Avoid unnecessary changes to this part of the home throughout the year.

3. The Three Killings in the West

In Goat years, the Three Killings settle in the West, covering a wide 75° arc from the late Southwest to the early Northwest.

The Three Killings are made up of three destructive forces, traditionally described as the Robbery Sha, the Calamity Sha and the Year Sha. Disturbing this sector is associated with sudden misfortune, illness, loss and legal or financial trouble.

This sector also overlaps with the Flying Star 2 (Sickness) in the West in 2027. Where the two meet, the case for caution is especially strong, particularly for the health of elderly family members and young children.

Avoid in this sector:

•         Renovation works of any scale, especially hacking and demolition

•         Digging, drilling, nailing into structural walls or opening ground

•         Heavy machinery and prolonged noise

•         Siting the main entrance, a child's or elderly person's bedroom, or the family's main seating area directly here where there is a choice

•         Relocating or installing major fixtures and large equipment

Keep this arc quiet, orderly and lightly used. If the sector must be used, prefer low-activity functions.

4. The Five Yellow in the North

The Five Yellow (Wu Huang), the most severe of the Flying Stars, flies to the North in 2027. The chart labels it as Misfortune. It governs obstacles, illness and accidents, and it becomes far more dangerous when it is disturbed.

Avoid in this sector:

•         Digging, drilling, hacking, renovation and groundbreaking

•         Loud, active or constantly moving features, like noisy machinery or busy play area

•         Locating the bed head, desk or the family's main seating here where possible

•         Allowing clutter or dust to build up

Keep it calm and uncluttered. Classical practice uses Metal to exhaust the Earth energy of the Five Yellow, such as a heavy metal structure, placed quietly and not struck.

Practical checklist for Interior Designers, Contractors, Electricians & Builders

If you are working on a property in 2027, build these steps into your process:

1.       Ask for the floor plan and mark the four sectors before work begins. Confirm the compass bearings with the owner or a feng shui consultant.

2.       Schedule disruptive works in a different part of the home first. Where possible, plan hacking, drilling and demolition so they fall outside the four sectors.

3.       Keep heavy equipment away from the sectors. This includes storage of materials, skips and machinery.

4.       Be careful with electrical and plumbing runs. Chasing walls, new DB boards, new point cutting and new piping in an afflicted sector count as disturbance.

5.       Do not stack up noise. Concentrated, prolonged noise in an afflicted sector is worse than a short, planned job elsewhere.

6.       Carry out major works before Li Chun (on or about 4 February 2027), or defer them until after Li Chun 2028. If neither is possible, speak with a qualified consultant about selecting an auspicious date and managing the sequence of works.

7.       Emergencies are different. Burst pipes, leaks, electrical faults and safety repairs must be done. Keep them as small and as quick as possible, and do not turn them into a larger renovation.

8.       Brief the household. Make sure the owner understands which areas are sensitive and why.

In summary

In 2027, the Grand Duke sits in the Southwest 1, the Clash in the Northeast 1, the Three Killings in the West, and the Five Yellow in the North.

Do not hack, drill, dig or renovate in these sectors. Keep them quiet and stable throughout the year, and plan all works with these locations in mind.

These observations are the product of nearly 30 years of practice across Ba Zi, Zi Wei Dou Shu, Qi Men Dun Jia and Xuan Kong Flying Stars. Applied sensibly, they cost very little and can spare a family a great deal of avoidable trouble.
